San Diego: San Diego Padres
San Diego City Overview
With an ideal year around climate, San Diego is one of the most popular travel destinations in America. Tucked between mountains on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, the city offers all sort of natural attractions and a temperature marine climate that never seems to veer too hot or too cold.
San Diego’s harborfront is one of the city’s main attractions, an eye appealing collection of watercraft, restaurants, and hotels. Across the harbor is Coronado Island, a community of its own that is home to the famous Hotel Del Coronado and a lively section of town along its main drag, Orange Avenue.
Slightly up the coast are some of the country’s most famous resort communities. La Jolla in particular attracts golfers, shoppers, and art lovers.
While the city is not without its problems, it’s no wonder that so many people are attracted to the area. Congestion and smog are nowhere near the levels of Los Angeles to the north, and the San Diego’s pace is somewhat more laid back and relaxed.
The Neighborhood – Petco Park
Petco Park is located in downtown San Diego, in close proximity to just about everything. The harborfront is immediately adjacent and the historic Gaslamp District is a short walk away. Surrounding the park are several restaurants and bars for pre and post game gatherings.
The Ballpark
One of the most spectacular ballparks in America, Petco Park is a magnificent addition to downtown San Diego. Adjacent to the harbor, Petco offers close up views of downtown and an intimate feel with great sightlines for fans.
The most unique feature of the ballpark is the incorporation of an old warehouse building into the design. The old Western Supply Company warehouse is actually a part of the park, towering over left field. The Padres team store occupies the first floor, and the remaining floors consist of suites, restaurants, and open air bleacher seating. It’s a great vantage point to watch the game, as is anywhere in Petco.
The ballpark is extremely easy to get to, as it’s located at the hub of San Diego’s public transportation system.
Ballpark Tours
Tours of Petco Park are available on Tuesdays through Sundays at 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30. Cost is $9.
Historic Baseball Sites
Prior to Petco Park, the Padres played in Jack Murphy Stadium, later renamed Qualcomm Stadium, though the 2003 season. Located at the intersection of Interstates 8 and 15, the facility now serves as the home of the San Diego Chargers NFL team.
Padres Tickets
As this is written, the Padres are currently in a down cycle in terms of competitiveness. However, much like any other southern California event, Padres games can and do sell out, particularly for popular rivals. As such, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for tickets.
Public Transportation
San Diego’s Metropolitan Transportation System is a great way to get around. A primary focus of MTS is the light rail system, which consists of three lines coded by the colors orange, green, and blue. There are over 50 stations in the area, with one located right outside of Petco Park.
Restaurants, Taverns, and Great Beer Bars
For now, we’ll focus on a few favorite choices that aren’t far from the ballpark, and add more down the line.
Karl Strauss Brewery Restaurant: San Diego’s very first brewpub has been going strong for almost 20 years. It’s just five minutes from the ballpark, the food is good and the beer is better! 1157 Columbia St., San Diego. Phone: 619-254-2739.
Rock Bottom Brewery: While you’re wandering around the Gaslamp Quarter, stop in here for a beer and one of their affordable happy hour specials. It’s a popular gathering spot before the games. 401 G St., San Diego. Phone: 619-231-7000.
Pacific Beach Ale House: One of our favorite places in San Diego hands down. It’s located in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego, with a great ocean view near the boardwalk. This brewpub has three levels of outdoor seating and dinner here overlooking the ocean is magnificent. There are usually six house beers on draft and a couple of guest taps. As you might imagine, fish is the star of the menu, either in appetizers, sandwiches, or entrees. 721 Grand Ave., San Diego. Phone: 858-581-2337.
Coronado Brewing Company: Just over the bridge on Coronado Island, this brewpub packs them in, especially for dinner. Stroll Orange Avenue and stop in here to give your feet a break. 170 Orange Ave., Coronado. Phone: 619-437-4452.
The Wit’s End: Friendly neighborhood and rather non descript pub offers great sandwiches, a friendly crowd, and about two dozen beers on tap. It’s about 15 minutes to Petco from here. 420 Robinson Ave., San Diego. Phone: 619-294-4848.
